Houston Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills threw the most uncatchable passes of the entire preseason.
So says Ben Linsey from Pro Football Focus. According to the football scouting and analytics firm, the Texans’ third-rounder from Stanford had 41% of his passes that were deemed “uncatchable,” which was the highest in the NFL among rookies. Jake Browning was second at 38%, and then third place was a three-way tie with Kellen Mond, James Morgan, and Tim Boyle at 33%.
The prevailing thought entering this season was that Mills would need to take over at some point so that Houston could get a look at him before making another quarterback decision next offseason. That is still likely the case, but Mills didn’t provide much reason for optimism with his preseason performance.
[Mills’] 43.7 passing grade was the third-lowest mark among qualifying quarterbacks, and his 41% uncatchable pass rate led all players at the position.
Coach David Culley told reporters on Sept. 1 that the one aspect of Mills’ game that he would like to see him improve upon is his consistency.
“The most important thing for many players is just consistency and being able to perform your job at a consistent level play after play,” said Culley. “Everybody’s going to have some bad plays, and I think as long as we’re improving, as long as making some progress, I think that’s the most important thing.”
The Texans will presumably turn to Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
