Texans OT Tytus Howard can play anywhere on the offensive line

The immediate position where Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard can help the Houston Texans is at left tackle. However, to hear both the 23rd overall pick and general manager tell it, Howard can fill any need along the Texans’ offensive line.

In a conference call with the Houston media following his selection in Round 1 of the 2019 NFL draft Thursday evening, Howard stated he can play anywhere.

It is one thing for a rookie to say anything to give his new employer assurances. It is another when the new employer shares the same sentiment, as general manager Brian Gaine did when he met with the Houston media Thursday.

Entering the draft, the Texans have third-year Julién Davenport and free agent Matt Kalil competing for left tackle. Seantrel Henderson is seen as the starter at right tackle. Somewhere 2018 third-round selection Martinas Rankin is supposed to compete for either of the tackle spots or against Senio Kelemete and Zach Fulton for a starting guard spot.

There is no question that the Howard pick gives the Texans depth. Now, it will be up to offensive line coach Mike Devlin to figure out how to get the most out of Howard and develop him into a quality offensive lineman.
