Texans LB Brennan Scarlett emotional upon receiving contract extension

On Wednesday the Houston Texans handed outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett a $3.75 million extension after another impressive year in 2018.

The former Stanford Cardinal was “excited” and emotional to sign his extension with the Texans earlier this week.

“A lot of emotions; it’s been a long journey up to this point,” said Scarlett. “I did not cry, but a lot of emotions. Obviously, the family is very happy. For me, it’s just another step.”

“There’s more that I want to accomplish in this game, but I also attribute to my supporters, and my family, and people that have been here, because I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

The former undrafted free agent has been with the Texans since 2016. In that time he’s made 30 regular season appearances recording 60 combined tackles, two sacks, four defended passes and an interception.

Scarlett’s role on Romeo Crennel’s defense has expanded greatly recently, especially thanks to the absence of Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney. Should the former first-overall pick not return to the Texans this year, Scarlett will have to take up a much more prominent starter’s role in 2019 and could, therefore, be in line for a long term deal at the end of this season.
