Tesco meal deal price hike: Shoppers left outraged at increased costs

Customers have been left outraged after the price of a Tesco meal deal has risen from Thursday, with some threatening to stop buying it completely.

The meal deal is a multi-item offering, which includes a main, snack and drink, provided at a discounted price.

Increased prices will see Clubcard members pay £3.85, up from £3.60, and those without a Clubcard £4.25, up from £4.

The price of the store's premium meal deal will also go up by 10 per cent from £5 to £5.50 for Clubcard holders, and from £5.50 to £6 for non-Clubcard holders.

This price hike comes after Tesco increased the price of the meal deal for the first time in a decade in 2022, and again last year, raising the price of the deal from £3.90 to £4 and £3.40 to £3.60 for Clubcard users.

Meal deal price spikes come after a rise in inflation rates was announced on Wednesday, seeing rates jump to 3.8 per cent in July, the highest since January 2024.

Several outraged shoppers have taken to the internet to hit out at Tesco with their complaints about price hikes.

Many shoppers complained the price hike was a signifier of the “cost of living crisis”, as the price of everyday amenities becomes more difficult for consumers to cover.

One Tesco employee took to Tik Tok, posting a video of herself shaking her head, with the words “crashing out (because) the price of meal deals is going up again,” along with the caption: “No longer a deal.”

One shopper posted on Reddit: "I will be boycotting the meal deal from (Tesco) when this hike occurs."

Many Brits have taken to using humour to express their upset at the price hike across social media platforms.

A Tesco spokesperson told the Standard: “Our meal deal remains great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on-the-go at just £3.85 for a main, snack and drink when bought with a Clubcard.

“With more than 20m possible combinations the Tesco meal deal has got something for every taste, from a classic chicken club sandwich to Tesco Korean style chicken dragon rolls.”
