Tesco has issued a “serious” product recall over a food item which may be a "risk to health."

The urgent warning over the chain’s LeSuperbe Raclette Cheese 150g has been made amid fears it has bacteria in a batch.

Manufactored by Castelli UK Ltd and sold by Tesco, there are concerns the cheese has Listeria monocytogenes inside.

The NHS say the bacteria can cause listeriosis, a "rare infection," which usually goes away on its own, but can make some people very unwell.

After being informed of the possible contamination, Tesco has since urged customers who have bought the cheese with a best before date of May 12 not to eat it, and to return it to any store, where a full refund will be given, with no receipt required.

The supermarket said that anyone with any additional queries can call Castelli UK Ltd directly on 01723 835 446, adding: "Alternatively, you can also contact Tesco Customer Services on 0800 505 555."

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also issued a statement over the cheese product, describing why it is so important customers should take note of the warning.

It stated: "The possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the above product.

"Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.”

The illness can arise from a person eating contaminated food, with cold, cooked meats, cooked shellfish and soft mould-ripened cheese just some of the products which can cause an infection if they contain the bacteria.

The organisation continued: "However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

"Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."

The FSA added: "If you have bought this product do not eat it. Instead, return it to where it was purchased for a full refund. For more information contact 01732 835446."
