- Analysis by Which? revealed that customers not using loyalty schemes at Tesco and Sainsbury's could pay more for branded groceries than shoppers at Waitrose.
- The consumer champion compared 245 branded items in February, including popular products from Heinz, Nescafe, and Mr Kipling, to draw its findings.
- Sainsbury’s non-Nectar members paid 14 per cent more than the cheapest retailer in the study, Asda, for a basket of items, while Tesco’s non-Clubcard price was 11 per cent higher, making Waitrose a "more competitive option" at 9 per cent more than Asda.
- Specific products, such as Amoy Straight To Wok Noodles and Sea salt and vinegar Ryvita Thins, were found to be significantly cheaper at Waitrose compared to Tesco and Sainsbury's without loyalty cards.
- Which? advised that while loyalty cards offer savings, non-cardholders are better off shopping around or heading to Asda for cheaper branded goods, due to concerns like data privacy or eligibility criteria preventing some from signing up.
