Terrified plane passengers run for their lives as 'jet bursts into flames'

Airline passengers ran for their lives after a fire broke out near the plane on the tarmac.

Mobile phone footage emerged online showing black smoke billowing from the bottom of a Latam plane at Confins International Airport at Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Passengers were filmed fleeing the scene as they exited from the rear of the aircraft while staff guided them towards a shuttle bus.

Passegner Fabiola Paiva told local paper Diário de Pernambuco the fire started when passengers began to disembark by the front door.

She said: "I looked to the side and everything was dark in the window.

"I shouted 'run you're on fire'. Then the officials opened the back door of the aircraft and everyone started to run away.

"It was just a scare. When we got off, an airport bus showed up and took us to another location."

In a statement released by the airport, officials said the fire started on equipment that assists the baggage-loading cargo shortly after the Latam Airlines flight 3664 touched down at around 1pm on March 26.

Two fire engines and an emergency operations centre team were called to the scene immediately.

The fire was successfully put out and the incident did not impact the airport operations.

There were no injuries reported.

The airport staff will launch an investigation into the cause of the fire.

A Latam Airlines spokesperson said the passengers 'landed in complete safety after a fire started at the rear mat of the luggage belt', Diário de Pernambuco reports.

"The fire was quickly controlled by the LATAM team and the Emergency Operations Centre (COE) staff at the airport," he said.

"The company reinforces that security is an indispensable value and that all its decisions are aimed at ensuring a safe operation."
