'Terrified' Call the Midwife star dodges finale spoilers as character death teased

Call The Midwife star Georgie Glen has said that she is “terrified” of spoiling the dramatic season finale of the show after fans were left on a devastating train crash cliffhanger last weekend.

The 65-year-old plays Miss Higgins on the beloved BBC period drama, a character whose fate is not in doubt at the moment, unlike Sister Julienne and Dr Turner, played by Jenny Agutter and Stephen McGann.

Fans were left reeling over the weekend after the shocking train crash left their lives hanging in the balance after they were flung from their seats when their train dramatically derailed.

Georgie appeared on Lorraine ahead of the season finale this weekend to chat with Christine Lampard, who was sitting in for regular presenter Lorraine Kelly on Friday’s show.

Georgie made her first appearance in the 2018 Christmas special and has since been a firm favourite with viewers of the show.

The actress said: “To be honest, when I saw the episode myself, I was shocked and I knew it was coming.

“I think the way it just evolved and happened at the end of the episode was shocking. We didn’t see it was about to happen.”

She continued with a sly grin: “I’m terrified I say anything that gives anything away. I’ve had the riot act read to me that I’ve got to be terribly careful what I say.”

She added: “Obviously that drama will continue to unfold throughout the final episode and it has repercussions throughout, because everyone has to put their fears to one side, roll up their sleeves and leave their personal worries aside.”

The Call the Midwife fan favourite also noted that Sister Hilda, played by Fenella Woolgar, is dealing with a delivery unaware of the devastating crash which her husband was the train driver of.

This comes as Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has suggested a devastating death could be coming after Sister Julienne and Doctor Patrick Turners' fates were left up in the air.

She told the Radio Times: “The thing is, if there was a train crash near where you live, in the world of Call the Midwife, the two people you could rely on to come and sort everything out are Dr Turner and Sister Julienne.

“But if they are in the eye of the storm, who will save them?”

Heidi left the heavy suggestion that one or even both of the characters could be killed off, adding that she is a “very daring woman” - only further teasing the tragic demise of Agutter or McGann, who she is married to.

The Call the Midwife creator often ends odd-numbered series with a death – and this is the climax of the eleventh run.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
