Tensions rise in RTE Liveline debate after The Waterboys cancel Donegal gig after being on stage for a few minutes

RTE Liveline listeners were left stunned after hearing about how legendary band The Waterboys walked off the stage in Gweedore, Donegal on Sunday evening.

The Scottish rock stars were set to close out the Fomhair Festival on Halloween night, but only appeared on stage for about a minute and a half before exiting once more.

And Monday afternoon's Liveline heard some stories from hopeful fans who had been looking forward to their appearance.

One man, Rueben, said that the musicians had "hurt the whole of the room" - a nod to the classic Waterboys track The Whole of the Moon.

The organiser of Fomhair Festival also called in, telling host Joe Duffy: "I was left to deal with a situation which was created unfortunately... Ticket holders will be refunded."

Brother Paul, the keyboard player for the rockers, explained the issues on social media on Monday afternoon.

He wrote: "What was happening was, the voltage was too low and had knocked out my Hammond B3 out of tune and was causing major issues with my top keyboard as well.

"Then, there were leaks developing around the stage causing some serious electrical risks. I actually got the sh**e shocked out of me from the mic as soon as I sat down at the keys.

"We waited as long as we could. But because none of these issues could get resolved, the call was made to put this one off to another date."

And frontman Mike Scott went one further upon hearing about what had been said by the promoters.

He tweeted: "I'm told promoter made an unprofessional + untrue announcement blaming the cancellation on me personally, resulting in online abuse directed against me by people who don't have the facts. Band & tour mgmt believed gig was dangerous and would not put band/crew/audience at risk."
