Ten staff members and two prisoners test positive for Covid-19 at HMP Nottingham

Ten members of staff and two prisoners have tested positive for Covid-19 at HMP Nottingham.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed the news today, Monday, October 5.

All positive tests at the site on Perry Road, in Sherwood, are confined within a single unit of the prison.

All staff who came into contact with anyone who tested positive are now isolating at home away from the site.

A prison service spokesperson said: “We have robust and flexible plans in place to keep prisoners, staff and the wider public safe based on the latest advice from Public Health England.”

It comes after 84 cases of coronavirus were confirmed at nearby HMP Lowdham Grange, with nearly 1,400 people being tested as a result of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, cases have risen rapidly across Nottingham in recent days - meaning the city has now become on of the worst affected areas for coronavirus in the country.

Figures on the NHS Digital 'progression dashboard' show that there were 1,159 new cases of Covid-19 in the seven days to October 2.

The city's case rate per 100,000 people is at around 350. There were 652 cases recorded in the city in just 24 hours until Sunday, October 4.

Labour MP for Nottingham South, Lilian Greenwood, said: “It’s hard to feel confident that we know the real number of cases in Nottingham now that the Government has admitted a ‘glitch’ in their counting, but it’s clear that infections are on the rise and that could mean the imposition of new local restrictions in the city.

“Everyone can play their part in helping to get the outbreak under control by acting responsibly and following the regulations - covering your face in shops, on public transport and in other indoor public areas; washing your hands regularly; keeping at least 2 metres from others and not socialising in groups of more than 6.

"It is also vital that anyone who shows symptoms of coronavirus self-isolates and takes a test.

“But Nottingham people can’t do this on our own. The Government must ensure that everyone who needs a test can get one quickly and easily and that the close contacts of everyone who tests positive are contacted and asked to self-isolate.”
