Temperatures to drop to -3°C in the North East as winter takes hold

Brits are set to feel the cold today as temperatures plummet and chilling winds sweep across the country.

Snow, sleet and hail are all potentially on the cards for parts of Northern Scotland, with temperatures plunging dramatically as winter draws near.

Meanwhile in the North East, we'll see lows of -3 °C on Thursday night as well as brisk winds.

The early hours of Thursday began with a Met Office weather warning as strong winds of up to 70mph battered parts of Scotland until around 3am.

And while the powerful gusts have now eased off, a cold blast of wind is still set to hit parts of the UK for much of the day.

Met Office forecaster Claire Nasir said: "Over the next 24 hours things turn a lot colder, Wednesday into Thursday,

"There will be significant wind chill particularly in the morning.

"The rain returns to the far north of Scotland, pushing south and that's where the really cold air is.

"It will be a bit showery to start the day and that nagging, persistent wind across more north eastern areas of Scotland and eastern parts of England will continue to see a feed of showers.

"Temperatures will struggle and if you're stepping outside wrap up warm as there's significant wind chill."

Here is what is in store for the North East:

Thursday

"Early showers will soon ease but winds will remain brisk through the morning. Largely fine and sunny from late morning through into the evening as winds ease. Feeling much colder than recent days. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

Thursday night

"Skies remaining clear this evening and for the first half of the night. Feeling rather cold. Becoming cloudy from the west later, with patchy rain and drizzle by dawn. Minimum temperature -3 °C."

Friday

"Rather drab on Friday with cloudy skies and outbreaks of patchy rain and drizzle throughout. Becoming rather breezy again. Milder than Thursday. Maximum temperature 12 °C."
