Temperatures set to drop heading into the weekend as frost starts to creep in

Temperatures are set to drop this week as a wintry chill affects the North East.

Over the coming days, temperatures will get much cooler - especially overnight - and we could even see some frost making an appearance.

Despite this, we will see plenty of sunny spells as we head into the weekend.

There is a weather warning in place from Friday for heavy rain but this no longer affects parts of the North East.

Nicola Maxey from the Met Office told us what to expect:

Wednesday

"We've had a sunny start to the day but cloud will build up by the afternoon and into the evening.

There will also be a strengthening breeze. Cloud will continue thickening overnight, with further hill fog likely.

"Temperatures will be around 12/13 °C."

Thursday

"It's looking much more cloudy with some sunny intervals around. Temperatures are similar but getting colder at around 4/5 °C.

"It's even colder when you get out of the city and into isolated and more rural areas."

Friday

"Cold air is pushing in from the north but we are looking at temperatures of around 9/10 °C and it will get quite chilly so there's a possibility of some frost around in the early hours by the time we reach the weekend.

"It will be sunny through the day.

"We're looking at a sunny weekend with clear nights which is why it is getting a bit colder as it is the build up of clouds that keeps the warmth in.

"It looks like a fairly settled period but temperatures getting cooler and it will be the case for the rest of the month.

"It's just fairly typical for this time of year."
