Telco TPG cops warning for triple-zero code breach

A telecommunications carrier that didn't declare its network was out and could have stopped people making triple-zero calls has been hit with a warning.

TPG's network went down for more than an hour on August 15, 2024, which left customers not able to make calls, including those to emergency services.

Rules say telcos must tell Telstra if their network is disrupted because it is responsible for the triple-zero emergency call network.

But TPG, which found out about the outage at 1.22am, did not report the incident to Telstra until 9.07am.

An Australian Communications and Media Authority investigation did not find any evidence customers had suffered harm because of TPG not reporting the outage.

It also found the majority of emergency calls made in the outage were able to get through via other networks.

But ACMA's Samantha Yorke said the importance of emergency calls being able to get through had prompted her organisation to crack down on breaches.

"It's crucial that all telcos have their systems and processes in place to ensure any network outages impacting triple-zero are identified and addressed as soon as possible," she said.

"They must also take timely action to alert other key stakeholders in the triple-zero ecosystem where a problem is being experienced."

ACMA issued TPG with a formal warning.

TPG said the cause of the breach was human error and those responsible had been given extra training on emergency call management.
