A Chandler, Arizona, family recently experienced a delivery that was anything but routine. Their newborn daughter arrived in the middle of a casino parking lot. Per PEOPLE, the couple, Regena and Frankie Felix, arrived at the hospital ready for the birth on Monday, July 13. However, they were allegedly sent home. According to FOX 10, the medical staff at the time felt that Regena’s labor was not progressing fast enough.
As a mother of four, Regena told the outlet she felt that the assessment was incorrect. Her instincts were reportedly proven right only minutes after they left the facility. When she felt that the baby was coming, Frankie had to find a safe, well-lit location to stop. He pulled into the parking lot of the Gila River Resorts and Casinos, SanTan Mountain, which became the site of the delivery.
PEOPLE noted that labor quickly became dangerous when the baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. It caused her to turn blue. Frankie had to act immediately to ensure his daughter’s safety. He successfully untangled the cord, and their daughter, Noa, was born in the front seat of their new SUV. Frankie told FOX 10, “How did you know what to do? I didn’t. Not enough military training in the world prepared me to deliver a baby, and I just did.”
Pregnancies and labor are all different, so predicting things can be hard
A situation like this can easily spiral from a standard check-up into an emergency. According to the Mayo Clinic, the process of labor is a unique experience that can be difficult to predict. The first stage of labor is the longest, involving early and active phases where the cervix opens and thins to allow the baby to move into the birth canal.
Per the site, early labor, also known as latent labor, is notoriously unpredictable. It can stop and start, and the duration varies from hours to days. It is often shorter for people who have already had a baby.

The Mayo Clinic notes that during early labor, contractions are often mild and inconsistent. However, once a person enters active labor, the cervix opens from 6 cm to 10 cm, and contractions become significantly stronger, closer together, and more consistent. This phase is when people often feel more pressure in their back or notice their water breaking.
While the average rate of dilation is approximately 1 cm per hour, every pregnancy is different. The clinic wrote that the transition from early labor to active labor can sometimes happen quite quickly. In a unique case, a Massachusetts woman called an ambulance for ‘stomach pains.’ She had believed it was severe side effects from her weight management medication. Not long after, though, she gave birth to a baby boy in the ambulance.
The second stage of labor, which involves the actual birth of the baby, can reportedly take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Recently, a Canadian mom who was taking a nap mid-labor got the fright of her life when the nurses couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat. However, when they went to check, they found that he had delivered himself.
According to the Felix family and FOX 10, the hospital visit did not go as planned. With some luck and the father’s quick thinking, they had a healthy daughter in the parking lot. It should be noted that there has been no statement from the hospital about this incident. Thus, neither their diagnosis nor their version of events is known.
Following the birth, Noa has been doing well. According to Fox 10, she is currently resting at home after receiving a clean bill of health from her pediatrician. The doctor reportedly described the newborn as a “feisty little thing” and took a moment to praise the parents for their calm and fast response during the delivery.
