Tehran’s only Unesco-listed building ‘at risk of being destroyed’ by US-Israeli airstrikes

  • Historians and archaeologists have warned that Iran's ancient cultural heritage is at risk of damage from US and Israeli airstrikes.
  • Experts from institutions including the British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum, and Soas expressed deep concern in a letter to The Times about the humanitarian impact and reported damage to cultural sites.
  • The UN cultural agency, Unesco, confirmed that four of Iran's 29 world heritage sites have been affected since the hostilities began.
  • Specific sites, including Tehran's Unesco-listed Golestan Palace and Esfahan's Chehel Sotoun, have sustained damage, with a museum in Khorramabad reportedly destroyed.
  • Concerns are also growing over the potential for environmental pollution from bombs to cause irreversible damage to sensitive ancient sites such as Persepolis.
