Teenager who failed to engage with judge is sent to the cells

A Bedminster teenager who admitted assaults on emergency workers told a judge: "I'm not violent".

Jemma Norman was due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court today. (November 15, 2021)

The 19-year-old, of Bedminster Parade, pleaded guilty to two assaults on police, one assault on a nurse and one racially aggravated public order offence regarding a police officer.

The charges span January to March this year.

Judge Mark Horton was told the relationship between Norman and her care coordinator had broken down.

Norman told the judge: "I put my cards on the table.

"She put me down as a violent person.

"I'm not going to walk around and hit people in the head.

"I'm not like that. I'm not a violent person like that."

Norman told the judge she hated the thought of hurting anyone and was never the first to lay hands on someone else.

As the judge tried to explore options for Norman's rehabilitation she told him:

"I don't really have time for your words.

"Proceedings are going to end one way."

Charley Pattison, defending, said: "She is 19 coming up to 20.

"There is still a lot of stigma attached to mental health.

"She is intelligent and at times articulate, who just wants to have a normal life."

When the judge asked her if she was willing to continue seeing her care coordinator, Norman replied: "No comment."

The judge remanded her in custody, pending an updated probation report, for sentence on December 2.
