Teenager spends £2,000 transforming garden into outdoor bar to avoid lockdown queues

A student opened the doors to his fantastic garden bar just as thousands struggle to get a table at their local.

Owen Barry, 18, from Nottingham, revamped the outside space into a beer haven ahead of his 18th birthday and got down to work back in February.

His account manager father, Stephen, 49, and brother Zach, 25, helped to bring his idea to life and the results speak for themselves.

Now they are counting down the days until Euro 2020 and will be expecting plenty of phone calls from friends asking for a spot in their bar for the big games this summer.

The family completed the project on April 11, just one day before lockdown restrictions were lifted and outdoor dining and drinking in bars and pubs was permitted.

Owen's garden bar features a cosy sitting area for family and friends from his social bubble to have a drink as the UK weather begins to warm up.

The family also want to install a projector to watch TV and plan to continue practising social distancing despite the easing of restrictions.

The entire project cost them just £1,800 – and they couldn't be more pleased.

Speaking about the garden transformation, Owen reckons it is a fantastic investment.

He said: "The cost was around £1,800 and the bar was created for my 18th birthday.

"We were unaware if pubs would be open so we instead we brought one home, with a projector on order.

"We plan to use it for the Euros and to host smaller gatherings reducing the amount of contact we have at the pub."

Owen shared photos of the final results on Twitter, with the tweet racking up over 3,100 likes as users praised him for a job well done.

One person wrote: "Looks amazing pal you've done a great job."

Another fan of the bar added: "Fair play that looks fantastic..."

"Great job, very impressive," wrote someone else.
