Teen who died following alleged stabbing was 'loved by everyone around him'

Pals have raised thousands of euro for the family of this teen – after he died last night following an alleged stab attack.

The GoFundMe page for Marius Mamaliga had raised more than €8,500 for the Dubliner’s family last night. Marius, who was 19, was allegedly attacked in Swords, North Co Dublin on Thursday.

His lifelong friend Matthew Czujek set up the special GoFundMe page to help his family. He said: “I want to help the family as much as possible.

“He was raised by a beautiful family and always treated everyone with respect and love. Can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for me and all of his friends around him.

“Marius was loved by everyone around him and meant a lot to his friends. He never failed to make them laugh and was always there for them when they needed him.

“We all love him very much and may he forever be in our hearts. We wanted to create this GoFundMe to support Marius and his family during this time and give Marius the memorial he deserves.

“The donations will be used to cover the cost of his funeral and to support his family with other costs. Any donation is greatly appreciated and will be directly given to his parents.”

A Garda spokesman said last night confirmed Marius had lost his fight for life. He added: “The 19-year-old male, who was seriously assaulted on Brookdale Avenue, Swords, Thursday, February 23, was pronounced deceased at Beaumont Hospital this afternoon, Sunday 26. No further information is available at this time.”

Meanwhile, a man has been charged in connection with Marius’ death. Brandon Gavin, 20, is accused with assault under section four of the Non-Fatal Offences Act.

He appeared in court on Friday night – and Detective Garda Conor Tumbleton told Judge Brian Smyth that Mr Mamaliga had been stabbed in the neck. Detective Garda Tumbleton said an artery had been cut as a result of the alleged attack.

And he added at the time: “Medical staff were unsure if he would survive and if he does so, probably will have severe brain damage.” Gavin of Brookdale Road, Rivervalley, Swords, was remanded in custody with consent to €51,000 bail requiring a €25,000 lodgement and will appear at Cloverhill District Court on Wednesday.

Detective Garda Tumbleton told the court the accused made “no reply” when he was charged at 12.25pm on Friday in Swords Garda Station. Objecting to bail, he cited the seriousness of the charge, which can, on conviction, carry a maximum penalty of a life sentence.

He told the court gardai responded to a report of a serious assault at Forest Court in Swords at 7.14pm on Thursday. Paramedics were attending to the alleged injured party. He was then rushed to Beaumont Hospital.

It was alleged Mr Mamaliga had been in his Audi car with two other males, who gave statements. They claimed they were parked when another male opened the car door and allegedly struck Mr Mamaliga in the neck before running away

The court heard the accused allegedly went home “crying and trembling” and told another family member to “get dad, get dad”. An hour and 10 minutes after the alleged incident, he presented himself to gardai after his father brought him to Swords station.

The court heard Gavin told gardai under caution that “He came at me, I defended myself, I stabbed him”.
