An 18-year-old in eastern Wisconsin has been sentenced to a year in jail and five years of probation after triggering a bonfire explosion that injured more than a dozen people at a backyard gathering. The incident occurred during a bonfire on Oct. 14, 2022, in Maple Grove, about 25 miles northwest of Green Bay.
The teenager, identified as Sam Armstrong, pleaded no contest in February to 13 counts of injury by negligent use of an explosive. Armstrong threw a barrel containing a mix of gasoline and diesel into the fire, causing the explosion that burned at least 17 of the approximately 60 youths present at the gathering.
Authorities reported that Armstrong claimed he did not realize his actions would lead to an explosion and cause injuries. He admitted to consuming alcohol before the incident. Several civil lawsuits have been filed against Armstrong by individuals injured in the explosion.
During the court hearing, one of the injured individuals, Benjamin Van Asten, expressed forgiveness towards Armstrong, referring to the incident as 'one little slip-up.' Van Asten mentioned that Armstrong was likely trying to impress his friends.
In a statement read by his defense attorney, Armstrong expressed remorse, shame, and embarrassment for his actions. He conveyed his apologies to those affected by the explosion.
The sentencing of Armstrong serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with reckless behavior involving explosives and flammable materials. It underscores the importance of exercising caution and responsibility in handling such substances to prevent harm to oneself and others.
