A strange and tragic hunting accident in rural Iowa has claimed the life of Carson Ryan, a senior at Washington High School about 100 miles southeast of Des Moines.
On Saturday, September 27, authorities say Ryan, 17, was squirrel hunting near Brighton, in Washington County, when a member of his hunting party mistakenly identified him as a squirrel and shot him in the back of the head. Despite immediate medical attention at UI Health Care Medical Center, Ryan succumbed to his injuries.
A beloved member of the community
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. Initial reports indicate that Ryan’s movement during the hunt led to the tragic misidentification. The DNR emphasized that this was an accidental shooting and does not anticipate any charges being filed.
Ryan was a beloved member of his community. Known for his athleticism, he was a standout on the Washington High School varsity football, basketball, and track teams. As a wide receiver and defensive back, Ryan contributed to his team’s success, including returning a kickoff for a touchdown.
Beyond sports, Ryan was recognized for his kindness, faith, and leadership. He served on the school’s homecoming court and was described by his assistant football coach as a “fierce competitor” with a “genuine spirit.” A GoFundMe supporting Ryan’s family has raised around $54,000 as of this report. Students at Ryan’s high school are encouraged to wear the school colors, orange and black, in his memory.
Accidental shootings, particularly during hunting activities, are a serious concern in the United States. While the number has declined over the past few decades, each incident underscores the importance of firearm safety and responsible hunting practices.
