Technology helps people find shelter in case of disaster in Tokyo

A smartphone-based system that would ease the process for emergency shelters to accept those stranded during a major earthquake was tested in Tokyo's Marunouchi business district in Chiyoda Ward while taking precautions to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Mitsubishi Estate Co., which unveiled the system on Tuesday, conducted the test as if an earthquake had occurred just below Tokyo.

When office buildings and other facilities function as a shelter to accept people during an emergency, the evacuees are supposed to scan a QR code with their smartphones and enter their date of birth, gender and body temperature among other information into the system.

The data will be sent to Mitsubishi Estate and the ward's task force, which will assign evacuees to less crowded buildings or guide those who are in poor physical health to other areas.

Mitsubishi Estate, neighboring companies and ward officials participated in the test at Marunouchi Building. The participants scanned QR codes to see if the data could be collected. While 30 office buildings are ready to accept about 16,300 people in the Marunouchi district, infection control measures are urgently needed.
