Tearful Kate Garraway has NTAs change of heart after tragic conversation as Finding Derek nominated

Kate Garraway has revealed she had a change of heart over asking for people to vote for her documentary Finding Derek at the National Television Awards, thanks to a tragic conversation she had with a stranger at the end of her drive.

Finding Derek, Kate's documentary about her husband Derek Draper's agonising battle with coronaviru s is on the shortlist for Best Authored Documentary at Thursday's ceremony, but on Good Morning Britain, Kate said she was torn on whether to go to the event and ask people to vote for her, admitting it 'felt wrong.'

Speaking to her colleagues Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis about her predicament, Kate said she felt really bad because the last time she was at the NTAs when GMB and I'm A Celebrity were both nominated, Derek couldn't go because he had to babysit their children Billy and Darcy.

Kate had just been on I'm A Celeb and, after going on stage with fellow campmates when it won, she felt bad that Derek couldn't be there, explaining: "I remember going up on stage and then calling him and saying 'I wish you'd been here, I probably will never be on this stage ever again,' little did I know then that the National Television Awards and everything else was besieged and what was coming for us.

"I've been feeling very emotional to be honest and wondering at all about going. It feels wrong to go; it feels wrong to be asking for people to vote because it's such a difficult subject."

Detailing the catalyst for having a change of heart over the awards, Kate explained: "Yesterday I was smashing up some boxes for the recycling at the front of my house.

"A lady walked past and she went 'ooh good luck for tomorrow night, I hope you win.' And I said 'oh I don't think we will there's so many good people in the category.

"And she said 'you've got to win. My sister got Covid in May 2020 and it damaged her heart.'

"It makes me feel tearful now....two weeks ago she died from that heart damage"

Kate added:. "And I just thought there are millions of people suffering from Covid, suffering from their livelihoods. There are people waiting to have treatment for other things because of the strain the pandemic has put on the NHS.

"And they, as we try and get on with our lives and feel joy again are starting to feel a bit forgotten. She said her sister used to watch the programme, watch the documentary and really found it to give her a real boost.

"So I kind of thought not for me, but for those people."
