Team Valley Currys PC World remains open after staff member tested positive for Covid-19

A Gateshead store says it's safe to remain open after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19.

A section of Currys PC World shop in Team Valley Retail World has been cordoned off and deep cleaned, but the rest of the shop remained open as normal on Saturday.

ChronicleLive understands the person in question had not been in the store since last week.

Some workers, who had been in close contact with the person who had fallen ill, have been asked to self-isolate.

Other members of staff remain at work.

The move is in line with government guidelines, which say workers must self-isolate if told to do so by NHS Test and Trace - but that this will not automatically be all of an infected person's co-workers.

All staff in the shop, including the person who tested positive, are understood to wear face masks while at work.

Currys PC World spokesperson said: "There is no greater concern for us than the safety and well-being of our colleagues.

"We have closely followed the Government’s ‘working safely during coronavirus’ guidance throughout the pandemic, and have put extensive hygiene and social distancing measures in place to make our sites Covid-secure.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that one colleague in our Gateshead store has tested positive for Covid-19. Thankfully they are doing well.

"As soon as we were made aware today, we worked quickly to instigate our internal track and trace process, through which a small number of colleagues were identified as coming into close contact and were also asked to self-isolate as a precaution. In addition, the affected colleague’s work area was cordoned off and deep cleaned.

"We will continue to be vigilant and support our colleagues.”
