Team Cherry has announced the first major expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Titled “Sea of Sorrow,” the DLC is set to release free for all players in 2026. The announcement comes as Silksong’s remarkably successful launch year draws to a close, marking a triumphant milestone for the independent developer.
Since its launch, Silksong has exceeded all expectations with over seven million copies sold, alongside millions more experiencing the game through Xbox Game Pass. The launch proved so successful that it temporarily crashed multiple storefronts. Alongside the announcement for the DLC, Team Cherry expressed gratitude for the thriving community that has emerged around the game and the supportive player base that has rallied around the game’s challenging content.

The nautically themed expansion is already well underway in development, promising to continue Hornet’s adventures with substantial new content. Players can expect new areas to explore, additional bosses to challenge, and fresh tools to master as they venture into uncharted territory.
Team Cherry released a teaser trailer offering glimpses of what’s to come, but the studio remains tight-lipped on specific details. More information will likely be released shortly before the Sea of Sorrow expansion launches next year. Much like the original Hollow Knight, Silksong’s first expansion will be completely free for all Silksong owners, ensuring every player can continue their journey alongside Hornet.

Hollow Knight updates across platforms
While Silksong is rightfully getting most of the attention, Team Cherry hasn’t forgotten about its beloved predecessor. The studio announced that it’s developing an enhanced edition of the original Hollow Knight for the Nintendo Switch 2, incorporating all the technical improvements that Silksong received on the platform. These enhancements include high framerate modes, increased resolutions, and numerous graphical effects that bring new life to the classic adventure.
Existing Nintendo Switch owners will receive the enhanced Switch 2 edition as a free upgrade when it launches in 2026. Alongside the Switch release, Hollow Knight will also receive free updates across all current platforms. PC players can experience many of these improvements immediately through public beta branches now available on Steam and GOG. Notably, the update also adds support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios, perfect for Steam Deck owners and those with ultrawide monitors. Additional improvements are scheduled to roll out before the full release next year.

To celebrate Silksong’s release, Team Cherry has partnered with artist Alex from Studio Tyto and Fangamer to create a new series of mini-figurines featuring Hornet and other characters, now available for pre-order. The Hollow Knight games will also appear in various holiday sales.
Team Cherry hinted at additional unannounced plans for 2026 while thanking the community for its continued support. The studio will take a holiday break before returning to what it’s calling “the big year to come.”
