Teachers issue 'devastating' update on Long Eaton school after major fire

Staff have been left "devastasted" as a Long Eaton school could not be saved as a large fire engulfed the building.

Teachers and staff at Harrington Junior School were evacuated after the fire broke out at about 12noon on Thursday, May 28.

Crews from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire fire services were called to the scene of the fire.

Large plumes of black smoke could be seen across the county as fire crews battled to control the inferno.

Two firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries as a result.

Fire crews worked through the night to ensure it was extinguished.

The school has now released a statement revealing the "devastating" news that the school could not be saved.

It reads: "Today has been an extremely difficult day. We were on site until nearly 9pm with the emergency services.

"We cannot thank them enough for their work and efforts in trying to save our school. But, it is with regret, that this has not been possible. All the staff are devastated.

"We wish to thank you for the all the kind messages of support and the generous gifts you have delivered. All have been touching- we cannot thank you enough.

"Due to the difficult nature of the work ahead, we will not be able to respond to individual messages but will seek to update you tomorrow."

Six fire engines remained at the scene yesterday evening, supported by one aerial ladder platform, a water carrier, an incident command unit and a welfare unit to support crews on scene.

Incident Commander, Group Manager Dean Gazzard from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said fire crews arrived to be "faced with a well-developed fire in the roof of the building."

It is not yet known what caused the blaze but an investigation is underway.
