Teachers and school staff with no Covid symptoms are set to get tested for the virus at work beginning this week in South Ayrshire.
Education employees who are working regularly in school or nursery premises are invited to start taking the tests twice a week, it is understood.
The kits are also available for older S4 to S6 pupils in secondary schools.
It is part of nationwide efforts to identify asymptomatic people with the virus in secondaries, primaries and special schools as soon as possible to avoid the spread.
Schools are being supplied with lateral flow device kits and instructions for staff and pupils to use at home.
A council spokesman said: "Testing will continue to be an important part of minimising the spread of the virus and we welcome voluntary testing for staff and senior pupils.”
Testing is voluntary and free of charge but people are encouraged to take part.
But it is for those without any coronavirus symptoms only. People showing symptoms are urged to go to a test centre instead and self-isolate.
Teachers and staff who are working from home will not be issued with kits.
All pupils in P1 to P3 and nursery children are due to return to the classroom full-time from February 22.
There could also be a part-time return for senior secondary pupils.
The Scottish Government is set to reveal further details on the phased reopening of schools in upcoming days.
