Taylor Swift to receive GLAAD Vanguard Award for being an LGBT ally

Taylor Swift is being honoured at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards with the Vanguard prize, which celebrates allies of the LBGT+ community.

The pop star has become a vocal supporter of LGBT+ rights over the years, and in 2019 wrote an open letter to Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander in support of the Equality Act.

Swift references GLAAD in her song “You Need to Calm Down”, widely interpreted as an LGBT+ anthem, with the lyric: “Why are you mad? When you could be GLAAD?”

Last year’s recipients of the Vanguard Award were Beyonce and Jay-Z

Among the other figures being honoured at this year’s ceremony is writer/director Janet Mock, whose most recent work includes writing, directing and co-producing the hit FX series Pose

The GLAAD Awards take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 16 April.
