Tasmanian man 'with axe' charged with attempted murder, breaching family violence order in Penguin

A north-west Tasmanian man has been charged with attempted murder and breaching a family violence order over an incident that left a woman with head and hand injuries.

Police said the 54-year-old man, who they allege had an axe, got into an altercation with the woman on South Road in Penguin about 6pm on Tuesday.

The woman received wounds to her head and hands and was taken to the North-West Regional Hospital, where she remains for observation.

Police said on Friday that the man, who is known to the woman, had been charged with attempted murder.

He was also charged with burglary, wounding and breaching a family violence order in relation to the incident.

He was taken into custody at the scene and remains in custody following two appearances in the Devonport Magistrates Court, on Wednesday and Thursday.

He will appear again on March 14.
