Tasmania Now: Tasmania posts record-setting retail boom

Here's what you need to know today:

Tasmania's biggest increase in retail trade

Last December was Tasmania's most valuable month ever for retail trade, with nearly $580 million changing hands in the state's shops.

Tasmania recorded Australia's biggest annual increase in retail trade that month, at 6.4 per cent.

That was more than double the national average growth of 2.8 per cent.

Trial of man accused of murdering mother starts next month

The trial of a man accused of murdering his elderly mother in Tasmania in 2016 will start in the Supreme Court in mid-March.

Doctor Stephen John Edwards has pleaded not guilty to murdering the 88-year-old woman by administering her drugs in her Sandy Bay home.

He has also pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to pervert justice, as has his brother Robert David Edwards.

It is alleged the pair conspired to provide false or misleading information about the circumstances surrounding their mother's death.

Tasmanian weather

There are showers about the east coast, and developing about the north from late morning.

It'll be fine elsewhere, apart from possible light showers in the south-east.

There'll be showers about the east tomorrow, but fine elsewhere.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

Updated information about fires and permits can be found on the Tasmanian Fire Service website.
