Tasmania Now: Fire damages Hobart primary school, police to trial Cradle Mountain outpost

The facility will be ready for the return of students in February, the schools' head said.

Here's what you need to know today:

Fire guts Catholic classrooms

Police are investigating a deliberately lit fire that damaged four classrooms at a primary school in Hobart's northern suburbs.

Fire crews arrived at Holy Rosary School at Claremont just after 8:30pm on Monday to find a cubby house in the playground well alight.

The fire from the cubby house, which was next to the school building, had quickly spread to classrooms, police said.

Crews were able to put the fire out, but the classrooms were extensively damaged.

Police say the damage bill could reach $500,000.

Police say they have received reports of people being at the school a short time before the fire.

The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office's Sean Gill said he was confident they would be able to accommodate all students when school returns on February 6.

"We're looking at making the site secure and safe, and in the second phase of our planning, looking at logistically what we need to do to get classroom facilities for students returning," he said.

Cop on the beat at Cradle

Tasmania Police will station an officer at the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, in the state's rugged central wilderness — as part of a three-month trial.

More than 300,000 people visit the area in the state's north-west every year.

Police say as the visitor numbers have increased, so too have the number of incidents that require police responses.

Incidents in previous years have included a number of search and rescue operations involving ground crews and aircraft.

In a statement, police said an officer would be stationed in the Cradle Mountain gateway precinct for three months to perform general police duties, including public safety, crime, traffic policing and emergency management, with the trial beginning this Thursday.

Rokeby knife incident

Police have responded to an altercation between two men on a Rokeby bus this morning.

Police allege one of the men produced a knife during the incident and injured the other man before both left the bus.

One man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the two men are known to each other.

Stalker to get mental health assessment

A Hobart court has heard of a 24-year-old woman's plea for her stalker to get professional help after he developed an obsession over her.

Claremont man Scott Donald Calver pleaded guilty to one count of stalking in the Hobart Magistrates Court last year.

The court heard the 55-year-old stalked his neighbour, a 24-year-old woman, for two months in 2018 by repeatedly driving past her family home and staring at her in public.

It caused the victim's father to speak to Calver about his inappropriate behaviour and install CCTV cameras.

Parts of the victim's impact statement heard she suffered anxiety and a loss of self-belief as a result of the stalking, but that she hoped Calver received the help he needs.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Michael Daly deferred Calver's sentence for more information about his mental health to be provided.

Tasmanian weather

Showers are forecast about the northeast but mainly fine elsewhere, with areas of smoke haze.

The Tasmanian Fire Service advises fire permits are currently required for the whole state of Tasmania. A fire permit can be obtained by calling 1800 000 699.
