Micheál Martin will meet Drew Harris on Friday morning to discuss how to curb takeaway drinking.
The meeting has been arranged between the Taoiseach and Garda Commissioner to try and figure out how to tackle the outdoor drinking problem.
Last weekend saw public outcry when social media videos emerged of large crowds drinking takeaway pints on the street in locations in Dublin and Cork.
The Taoiseach and Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, thought they needed to act to stamp out the social gatherings.
And a plan was hatched to bring a memo to Cabinet with proposals for gardaí to be allowed fine people for drinking takeaway pints, or for two or more people gathering together.
But this fell flat on its face when it was clear the rest of the Cabinet was against it and the ideas were shelved.
Instead, it was agreed that Garda powers already exist to tackle the problem and that a meeting with Commissioner Harris would be the best way forward.
If any new powers are required, the Commissioner will let the Government know at the briefing.
That meeting will take place on Friday morning with the Taoiseach, Commissioner, Mr Donnelly and Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee all attending.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Ms McEntee has bowed to opposition pressure and will make a statement to the Dáil next week on the Seamus Woulfe affair.
Mr Woulfe was appointed to the Supreme Court after Ms McEntee presented his as the only name to Cabinet, despite other judges throwing their hat in the ring too.
Opposition TDs were not happy and Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil was dominated by the issue again on Thursday afternoon.
They want to question Ms McEntee about whether all proper procedures were followed in the former Attorney General getting the top job.
Labour Leader Alan Kelly has rejected Ms McEntee’s offer as “laughable” because he says it just amounts to a reshuffling of the schedule, and not real accountability.
He said: “This is a completely spurious suggestion from the Minister and changes nothing. It’s laughable.
“She has no choice but to answer her normal PQs.
“The Minister for Justice and the Government must now end this charade and agree to make a statement to the Dáil on Tuesday afternoon followed by a Q&A with opposition spokespeople.
“It is highly misleading for the Minister to present her request for the rescheduling of her standard Oral Question session which covers all matters under her brief as some kind of concession to the calls from the Labour Party for nearly a week now for her to answer specific questions in the Dáil on the Supreme Court appointment process.”
