Taoiseach Leo Varadkar reveals how he weighed nearly 18 stone at one point

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar revealed how he weighed nearly 18 stone in the past.

The fitness fanatic now takes part in triathlons, and even did a running meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2017.

But Mr Varadkar revealed that he used to weight 114 kg with a 40 inch waist.

He said: "I used to be very overweight. I was 114kg with a 40 inch waist once upon a time.

"Fitness has become part of what I do. I try to train about four times a week, usually first thing in the morning before going into work."

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says he hopes Jeremy Corbyn will come up with a 'compromised' Brexit plan with Theresa May

Mr Varadkar has decided to take on Operation Transformation expert Karl Henry's six-week challenge after he discovered on the show that his metabolic age is 53.

He told Karl's Real Health podcast: "It followed on from the Operation Transformation metabolic age that had me come out with a metabolic age of 53, even though I’m actually 40, at least chronologically.

“I was a bit surprised at that so I thought I’d delve into that a little more and find out where I’m doing well and where I’m going wrong and what I can do about it.”

He also spoke about how he's put on 10lbs since he became Taoiseach two years ago.

But he said that he works out four times a week and regularly hits the gym before work.
