CHENNAI: Walking through the corridors of Ripon Building, the civic body’s headquarters, on Tuesday evening, chief minister M K Stalin reminisced about his time as the city’s mayor.
“My father told me ‘many wanted me to lock you in a room in the secretariat and make you a minister. But I gave you the mayor post and the entire city for you to improve’,” Stalin said.
The CM, who became mayor in1996 and started the Singara Chennai project, said “People often take tours to foreign countries and do little. When I was the mayor I only focused on improving the infrastructure and basic amenities of the city.”
The CM was on his first visit to the Greater Chennai Corporation headquarters after the DMK formed the government.
He flagged off projects worth ₹36.52crore that included 15 compactor vehicles and 1,684 battery operated vehicles to be used for solid waste management. He also gave appointment letters to 195 people who had got jobs on compassionate grounds.
