Tamil Nadu liquor shops to close early? Check TASMAC proposal on timing change and 'new' legal drinking age

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major crackdown on liquor sales across the state, reaffirming that people below 21 years of age cannot buy or consume alcohol legally.

Along with stricter enforcement of the age rule, the government has also ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor outlets operating near religious places, educational institutions and bus stands.

The move comes amid concerns over rising alcohol consumption among minors and growing public criticism over the location of several liquor shops.

At present, TASMAC — the state-run body that controls liquor sales in Tamil Nadu — operates 4,765 outlets. After the latest closures, that number will reduce to 4,048.

Why is Tamil Nadu closing TASMAC shops?

PTI reports, according to officials, the state government wants to reduce the accessibility of liquor near sensitive public spaces.

Out of the 717 shops set for closure:

  • 276 are located near places of worship
  • 186 are near schools and colleges
  • 255 are near bus stands

The decision follows a statewide review of TASMAC outlets and their locations.

The closures are expected to happen in phases.

What is the legal drinking age in Tamil Nadu?

The Tamil Nadu government has once again clarified that the legal age for purchasing and consuming alcohol in the state is 21 years.

Officials said TASMAC employees have now been instructed to check identity proof if there is any doubt regarding a customer’s age.

This could include:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Driving licence
  • Other valid government-issued ID cards

The government says the goal is to prevent underage drinking and improve enforcement at liquor outlets.

Will TASMAC shop timings change in Tamil Nadu?

The government is also considering reducing the operational hours of liquor shops.

Currently, TASMAC outlets function from:

  • 12 noon to 10 pm

However, officials spoken to PTI said a proposal is being discussed to change the closing time to 8 pm.

No final decision has been announced yet.

How much revenue does TASMAC generate for Tamil Nadu?

Despite repeated debates around alcohol sales, TASMAC remains one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest revenue sources.

In 2025, liquor sales reportedly generated:

  • Rs 48,344 crore in revenue

This made TASMAC the second-highest revenue-generating department in the state after the registration department.

The latest measures suggest the government is attempting to balance revenue interests with growing concerns around public health, underage drinking and the social impact of alcohol accessibility.
