MADURAI: Civil Supplies CID unit of Madurai seized 15 tonnes of PDS rice being smuggled and confiscated a truck used for the purpose. Two out of four accused have been arrested by the sleuths while the other two remain at large.
Based on a tip off, the sleuths intercepted the truck at Kappalur toll plaza around 5 a.m. on Sunday. During the inspection, they found 300 bags of PDS (Public Distribution System) rice with each bag weighing 50 kgs. Altogether, 15 tonnes of rice was seized by the sleuths. Interrogation revealed that S Sasikumar from Kamuthi had sourced this rice and was transporting it in the truck to Kerala for the better price.
The driver of the truck T Wilson and his helper T Ashesh from Vilavangodu in Kanyakumari district were taken into custody by the food cell sleuths. A case has been registered under Essential Commodities Act on the truck crew, consignment owner Sasikumar and the truck owner A Velayutham from Kanyakumari district. Sasikumar and Velayutham are absconding while the crew has been arrested, the officials said.
