Tamil Nadu education policy panel meets CM M K Stalin

CHENNAI: The committee for state education policy, headed by retired judge justice D Murugesan, met chief minister M K Stalin at the secretariat on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu had constituted the panel to formulate an education policy for the state that is expected to focus on the upliftment of the student community, keeping in mind the legacy of the state, and also plan based on its present and futuristic goals. It was constituted in April this year.

Justice Murugesan said he had a one-on-one meeting with the chief minister ahead of the discussion with all the members. The CM had sought recommendations to ensure quality education for every child in the state. While the panel has been given a year to come up with a constructive policy, the CM urged them to see if the process could be expedited.

He stressed the need for including early childhood development and early intervention in children with disabilities into the policy framework. The members of the committee gave their views on the policy as well. The committee plans to go to the field, including colleges and universities, and meet all stakeholders like students, parents, educationists and NGOs. Justice Murugesan said the entire process would be transparent. A draft report would be placed before the public for their opinion before it is finalised, he said. This committee would have its second meeting on June 25, besides the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, he said.
