CUDDALORE: Seven people were feared drowned in a river on Sunday afternoon near Nellikuppam in Cuddalore district.
Police said a group of women and girls from villages near Nellikuppam were bathing in Kedilam River on Sunday afternoon. The water flow in the river increased rapidly and the people, who could not swim or stay themselves afloat drowned.
The passers-by rescued the drowned people and rushed them to the Cuddalore government general hospital.
The doctors on duty proclaimed them brought dead. The deceased were identified as A Monisha, 16, R Priyadarshini, 15, her sister R Divyadarshini, 10, M Navitha, 18, K Priya, 18, S Sangavi, 16 and M Sumutha, 18.
Priyadarshini and Divyadarshini hail from Ayankurinjipadi village while the rest are from A Kuchipalayam near Nellikuppam in Cuddalore district.
