Tami Neilson: Dynamite! review – a 50s-friendly blast

Tami Neilson, CDs
Tami Neilson: 'powerhouse voice'.

Neilson has become a cause celebre in her adopted homeland of New Zealand, scooping up awards for this and three previous albums. Her powerhouse voice recalls 1950s stars such as Wanda Jackson and Patsy Cline, and Dynamite! has an unashamedly retro style to match. Still, the bluesy strut of Walk (Back to Your Arms) would have made a perfect fit for Amy Winehouse, and nine other snappy cuts, while steeped in honky-tonk nostalgia, are similarly accessible. Rockabilly twang drives Woo Hoo and Come Over, Texas is a fiddle-driven ballad, while pedal steel weepie Whiskey and Kisses and the moody strings of Running to You are fine male/female duets. As the title promises, a blast.
