It was announced today that several London pedestrian crossings will automatically display a “green man” unless a vehicle is approaching.
The plans, put in place by Transport for London, are part of an initiative to make London a more “walkable city.”
This follows news that as a result of the pandemic, almost a third of Londoners are now making routine journeys by foot.
Walking has, understandably, also become a popular leisure activity - with over half now regularly walking for exercise.
The crossing locations - so far in Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hounslow, Richmond, and Hillingdon - have been chosen on the basis of high pedestrian flow and practicality.
London’s walking and cycling commissioner, Will Norman, said of the move: “We know that safety is a key concern for people walking around London, and giving pedestrians priority is a powerful way of putting them first and making it easier to cross London’s roads.”
