Talking Horses: Pontefract tips in our daily horse racing blog

Today's best bets

Well, we saw something pretty special yesterday. She was brilliant the way she made up the ground and treated her rivals with contempt. The form of her races has worked out superbly well too. She must be a candidate for horse of the year. Treve? No, Moonlight Cloud.

Thierry Jarnet must have had all of his mount's backers screaming at the gogglebox during the Prix de la Foret. How was she going to make 10 lengths on Lord Gordon Byron … er, Lord Byron Gordon … er, whatever. Here she is in all her glory. C'est magnifique.

Just one minor point. Well, major actually. Why not have that race before the Arc?

On to today and the best wagers are at Pontefract. Roger Charlton, whose Al Kazeem ran an honourable race in the Arc (to finish sixth), can win with Stomp (2.40), who looks the sort to start going places now she's handicapping. In the final race of the afternoon, Thatchmaster (5.10) has shown enough to suggest a maiden like this is well within his capabilities.

Tipping competition - a new week

Congratulations to Dangalf, who picked Tindaro (4-1) on Friday to seal victory in last week's competition on +19.75.

This week's prize is a pair of County Stand tickets to Doncaster for Racing Post Trophy day on Saturday 26 October. The Trophy is the last major two-year-old race of the British Flat season and has been won by Camelot, St Nicholas Abbey, Authorized and Motivator in the past 10 years. This year's entries currently include Australia, Toormore, Outstrip and War Command. If you don't win, you can buy tickets here.

To kick things off, we'd like your selections, please, for these races: 3.50 Windsor, 4.30 Wolverhampton, 4.40 Pontefract.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
