Eric Alston's Summer Gold (3.35) is one of the least exposed runners in today's Carlisle Bell and, with her stable in good form, this ex-Irish filly looks worth an interest. Alston says Summer Gold would not want the ground too soft, but she has run well on it in Ireland and is by Barathea, whose progeny usually operate well with some give underfoot. I liked the way Summer Gold won her race at Newcastle and she could still be well handicapped.
There has been a bit of money for Sister Act (8.50) at Kempton tonight, which is encouraging as her trainer, James Fanshawe, has been going through a sticky patch. He had a couple of winners over the weekend, though, and will be keen to win a race with the well-bred Sister Act, who will be off to the paddocks shortly. She is reported to be in foal to Oasis Dream and fillies in her conditions off show improved form in their final races.
Ryan Moore looks set for a good day at Salisbury. Riding for the in-form Willie Haggas, he can score on Candela Bay (3.45), who shaped well on her seasonal debut at Windsor. Unusually for one by Captain Rio, she goes well on fast ground.
4.20pm Wind Star unlucky at Carlisle
Lochiel was a 25-1 shock winner of the Cumberland Plate but the one to take from the race was clearly Wind Star, a 16-1 shot. Full of running two furlongs out, he looked the winner but could find no way through until too late. Alan Swinbank's five-year-old has been hard to win with but he's clearly capable of scoring off his present mark.
Summer Gold was a shade disappointing but Candela Bay won for us at 11-4.
