Takeaways from first half of Chargers vs. 49ers

The Chargers currently lead the 49ers, 20-14 at the halfway mark.

There have been a few takeaways from the first half of the preseason finale:

  • Cardale Jones has made his case to remain on the roster, throwing 10-of-16 for 149 yards, along with five carries for 26 yards and a touchdown. Jones has looked poised, is making good throws and isn’t afraid to run it.
  • Troymaine Pope had the advantage for RB3 coming into the game, but Detrez Newsome isn’t going down without a fight. Newsome has five carries for 24 yards and a score, as well as two receptions for 32 yards.
  • Artavis Scott has done enough to earn a roster spot, and he is quickly creeping up the depth chart. Through the first half, he has three receptions for 55 yards.
  • Offensive tackle Trey Pipkins was off to a strong start, paving the way for running back Troymaine Pope’s big carry in the first quarter, but he’s fizzled out in the pass protection department.
  • Chris Peace flashed some range, chasing down a 49er running back for a one-yard loss. It’s still a tight race between him and Anthony Lanier.
  • The run defense has been poor, allowing 94 yards on 14 carries.
  • Linebacker Jatavis Brown was injured towards the end of the half. It appeared to be a lower body injury. He was able to walk on his own, but he went to the locker room.
