Takeaway gets second zero star hygiene rating in two months

A popular takeaway was hit with a second zero star food hygiene rating in two months.

Geno's Kebab and Pizzeria on Duke Street, St Helens, was first given the poor rating in early January and ordered to improve. The premises were re-inspected in February but were not seen to have improved sufficiently.

Rated from zero to five, food hygiene ratings are given to food handling businesses after an inspection has assessed how well they comply with food safety laws. Anything less than a five will result in instructions given on how the business can improve.

A rating of zero suggests that the business could be putting people's health at immediate risk. On February 23, inspectors found that urgent improvement is necessary for the takeaway's management of food safety.

They also ruled that the building was not in a fit state to prepare and serve food, ordering major improvements to the cleanliness and condition of the premises. This includes appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control around the premises.

Improvements were also reported to be necessary in regard to the business' hygienic food handling. If the authorities deem that the takeaway is putting customers' health at risk, they can order its closure until it is deemed safe again.

Geno's Kebab and Pizzeria was approached for comment.
