Takeaway bosses cooked up way to avoid paying £200,000 income tax and VAT

Owners of a Chinese takeaway in St George have admitted evading £200,000 in income tax and VAT.

Guang Lin, 43, and his wife Chuan Xie, 39, run the Shanghai outlet in Two Mile Hill Road.

The pair were due to face trial on Tuesday, April 23 at Bristol Crown Court.

But, after a hearing in which His Honour Judge Mark Horton indicated maximum sentence, they admitted wrongdoing.

Both pleaded guilty to being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of duty between May 2013 and June 2017.

Both pleaded guilty to being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of income tax between April 2012 and April 2017.

And both pleaded guilty to transferring criminal property between October 2012 and November 2016.

"Jealous" man Carl Satterly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend's new friend and tried to run him over in Portishead

The judge said the pair sought advice before embarking on a sophisticated and significantly planned fraud.

Lin avoided income tax just short of £40,000 while Xie avoided income tax just short of £41,000.

They both avoided VAT to the tune of £119,000, the court heard.

Susan Cavender, prosecuting, said between 2012 and 2017 the pair's business took £800,000 in sales and Lin only put in one tax return.

Limited information was given to the couple's accountants, the court heard.

They sent an undisclosed sum of money to China and mum-of-four Xie bought a house in Hillside Road, Bristol, for cash.

The judge said the maximum sentence would be three years and three months, pending probation reports and mitigation.

Ekwall Tiwana, defending Lin, said the defendants were willing to pay the money back.

The pair are due to be sentenced today (April 24).
