Takeaway boss wants people to know "filthy" one star shop with same name isn't his

A takeaway boss wants people to know his shop has nothing to do with a 'filthy' one star fast food business of a similar name.

Last week, the ECHO revealed how hygiene officers found a catalogue of problems at Moonlight Takeaway 1 on Irlam Road in Bootle.

Inside officers found a grimy kitchen, raw meat stored next to cooked foods, and a complete lack of soap at the chefs' hand-wash basin.

During the inspection - on June 26 - raw meat was also found to be stored above cooked and ready to eat foods, causing a risk of cross contamination, which could lead to food poisoning.

Now Eshan Zare, who owns Moonlight Takeaway 2, on Westminster Road in Kirkdale, wants people to know his shop is a completely separate business.

Moonlight Takeaway 2 - in fact - has a two star hygiene rating.

Following an inspection on June 10 of this year, health officers said improvement was needed for 'hygienic food handling'.

Mr Zare said: "[Moonlight 1 and 2] did used to be a joint business but have been sublet to two new managers in their own right.

"[The Westminster Road shop] has recently had a huge investment into its premises and we hope to get an improved rating soon.

"We would like to make it clear to the public that the two shops in question are not linked to each other in any which way."

Moonlight Takeaway 2 features on Just Eat and 'popular offerings' are listed as Margherita pizza, garlic bread with cheese and donner kebab.

A Just Eat spokeswoman said "We are at the forefront of raising food hygiene standards across the UK takeaway sector.

"Any restaurant wishing to partner with us must be Food Standards Agency registered with the relevant local authority, and provide evidence of this, before we put them on our platform.

"However, we do not allow zero-rated restaurants to trade on the Just Eat platform, and are investing more than £1million in a bespoke improvement programme for restaurants with a food hygiene rating of below 3."

Moonlight Takeaway 1 has been approached for comment.
