It's now one win to go for sekiwake Takakeisho to return to the rank of ozeki as the sekiwake defeated ozeki Tochinoshin to post his ninth win of the basho on the 11th day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Takakeisho, who was demoted from the rank of ozeki to sekiwake after sitting out the entire previous tourney in July, needs 10 wins to come back to the ozeki position.
Takakeisho pushed down ozeki Tochinoshin from behind, with the ozeki falling to his knees inside the ring before going belly-down on the edge.
Tochinoshin suffered his sixth loss of the tourney and can afford only one more loss if he is to stay in the rank of ozeki. As an ozeki in kadoban status, he needs to post at least eight wins to avoid losing his rank.
Takakeisho now shares the lead with No. 10 maegashira Meisei.
Meisei (9-2) kept moving forward while No. 15 maegashira Ishiura (6-5) tried to dodge Meisei's move, but the Meisei managed to force Ishiura out of the ring.
The two leaders are followed by a group of five wrestlers, including sekiwake Mitakeumi who suffered his third loss of the tourney, with eight wins apiece.
Mitakeumi had a good initial charge against No. 5 maegashira Ryuden (6-5) but the maegashira skillfully reversed their positions and pushed out the sekiwake.
Meanwhile, ozeki Goeido pushed out No. 5 maegashira Chiyotairyu (2-9) in a quick job to post his seventh win of the tourney. Goeido, also in kadoban status, needs one more win to exit the status.
