Tailteann Cup quarter-final draw pits familiar foes against one another

The draw for the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals was made on Morning Ireland earlier today. As the northern and southern split will also apply to the second round, there are plenty of provincial clashes.

Dublin legend Noelle Healy was on hand to pull teams out with Leitrim the first county out.

They will host Sligo while Fermanagh will welcome the visit of tournament favourites Cavan.

Then in the southern section, Carlow will have home advantage over Westmeath while New York will fly in and eventually make their way down to Tullamore.

New York had received a bye for the first round for logistical reasons. This will be their first Championship game on Irish soil since 2001.

Over the weekend just gone, Sligo knocked London out while Carlow produced a fairly big upset by defeating Tipperary.

There was no danger of the other 2020 provincial champion getting caught out though as Cavan eased past Down while there was a goal in it between Fermanagh and Longford.

Meanwhile Offaly saw off Wicklow and Westmeath beat Laois. Leitrim were also impressive as they completely outplayed Antrim.

Offaly boss John Maughan spoke to RTE in the immediate aftermath of the draw and was very positive about the initial impression the Tailteann Cup has made.

He said: "We're getting a lot of gametime into the U20s which is good. It's a great competition for them.

"I'm a great believer in the Tailteann Cup and we're just delighted to be into the quarter-finals especially now to have a home game."
