T-Rex balloon to take to Canberra's skies

The T-Rex balloon coming to the Canberra Balloon Spectacular.

A giant T-Rex balloon will be the star of the Balloon Spectacular which returns to Canberra's skies from March 7 to 15.

The giant Tyrannosaurus Rex balloon is among 30 balloons from around the globe taking part in the 35th balloon spectacular.

Each morning from 6.15, weather conditions permitting, balloons will launch from the lawns in front of Old Parliament House.

There will also be live music, hot drinks and a hot breakfast provided by the Belconnen Lions Club and various food trucks.

Skywhale, now part of the Gallery of Australia collection, is also scheduled to fly on Canberra Day, Monday March 9.

The T-Rex balloon is sure to be a hit.

Arts and Cultural Events Minister Gordon Ramsay encouraged locals to consider booking a flight during the festival as a way of supporting Canberra's two balloon companies that have been impacted by the recent bushfires.

"What a great way to show the love for Canberra's tourism industry and tick off a bucket list item as part of the #HolidayHereCBR campaign," Mr Ramsay said.

The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is the only event in the world where balloons can fly so close to buildings of national significance including being able to fly over Parliament House.

  • During the festival, keep an eye on updates on Facebook, Twitter, or call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 from 6.15am for daily information about whether the balloons will fly.
