A Syrian schoolboy living in Northern Ireland has captured hearts after revealing how he acts as an interpreter for other pupils - while speaking with a strong Belfast accent.

Mohammed, who also lived in Lebanon, was praised as "inspiring" by viewers after telling BBC News how he uses his English skills to help fellow students from Syria.

The schoolboy, who has developed a native accent since moving to Belfast, said he now wants to learn more languages, including Gaelic.

The St Clare’s Primary School said: “It was almost kind of normal because in Lebanon, I moved from Syria to Lebanon, so I learned a bit of French. I forgot most of it now.

“So I came here and then learned for a bit. I started learning and coming to my friends, talking and trying my best to learn stuff.

“Then, it worked. That’s how I got to this point.”

He added: “When they’re stuck on something, or the teacher wants to tell them something, like there’s an event coming up, they just call me from my class and say: “Can you explain that to them?””

Mohammed is hoping to learn “probably Spanish or Irish” next, adding: “I would like to have three languages, it’s better than two.

“Irish maybe, because I might stay in this country. Because I play Gaelic and hurling, that could be good for me.”

Twitter users said Mohammed was “lovely” and praised him for helping his classmates.

One said: “A wonderful and resourceful young man. To have another language is to have another soul.”

Another tweeted: “What a little legend!”

A third said: “Inspiring - that's one reason I love kids - in the school where I work there are about 58 different languages - and usually within 3-6 months of arriving the kids are fluent in English and just need extra help for a few months-a year. Kids are challenging but amazing!!!”

Viewers also commented on his new accent, with one saying: "Oh my god this kids accent."
