Syria war: Russia launches first air strikes from base in Iran against Isis and rebels

Russia has launched bombing missions in Syria from Iran for the first time as the two countries continue to support Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The Russian ministry of defence said planes had struck targets in Aleppo Deir ez-Zor and Idlib provinces on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said long-range Tu-23M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 fighters took off from a base in Hamadan to strike “targets belonging to the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groups”.

It said command centres, training camps and weapons depots were destroyed in Saraqib, al-Bab, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor, and a “significant number“ of militants killed.
